Preparing Ph.D. Students for a Wide Array of Careers in Science

This seminar series is open to all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore has always been at the forefront of preparing graduate students for careers in science that extend beyond the traditional "path of academia". The Graduate Program in Life Sciences continues this tradition with new initiatives to ensure that our graduate students are highly prepared for and knowledgeable about their post-graduate career opportunities. A new seminar series, Alternative Careers in Science, will be launched in Spring 2007. Attendance is open to all UMB graduate students and post-docs. The list of speakers will be diverse in the types of careers represented. These will include biotechnology firms, pharmaceutical industries, scientific patent, legal council and more.

Frank Margolis, Ph.D., Director of Graduate Education, Program in Neuroscience is serving as the chair of this seminar committee.

Dr. Margolis has a unique level of experience with research careers inside and outside of academia and our students are fortunate to benefit from his willingness to share his views and expand their horizons.

In addition to the seminar series, GPILS is exploring ways to offer on-site visits to various scientific industries for its graduate students.
