The statement of academic goals and research interests serves as a writing sample and is your chance to express your reason(s) for studying Gerontology, why you are interested in our program in particular, and your future plans. - TOEFL
A TOEFL must be submitted for international students who do not have a Bachelor's or Master's degree from a U.S. institution. - CV
All items must be submitted in order for your application to be reviewed. The program's admissions committee reviews applications and selects students for the interview process. Those who are selected are required to interview in person or virtually. The program will arrange the interviews.
Transcripts
Transcript Requirements
Unofficial copies of your transcripts may be provided for the application review process and should be uploaded as supplemental items to the online application. You must submit transcripts from each college/university attended, including coursework in progress at the time of application.
If you are offered admission, you must then provide official transcripts from each college/university from which a degree was earned. The transcript must be provided to the Graduate School directly from the prior, degree-granting institution in a sealed envelope in order for that document to be considered official. Alternatively, it may be provided to the Graduate School electronically by way of a secure, encrypted platform. Each transcript should bear the signature of the registrar and the seal of the granting institution.

Official, electronic transcripts may be sent directly from your degree-granting institution to gradapply@umaryland.edu.
International applicants must provide one (1) official transcript in English and one (1) official native language transcript or mark sheet from each college or university attended. Each set of documents must list subjects studied, grades or marks received, and rank in class or division.
The Graduate Programs in Life Sciences (GPILS) requires international applicants to provide a transcript evaluation from a NACES member evaluation agency in addition to the official, translated transcripts or mark sheets. We recommend using one of the following companies:
Financing Your Education
The program's commitment is to fund students in their first year and to make every effort to provide funding for the second year and beyond, as resources permit.
As part of continued funding, the program leadership and students’ faculty advisors/mentors will also work with students to identify alternative funding for subsequent years in the program. Funding remains contingent on availability of research grants and other funds. Such funding may involve state support and/or extramural research, among other options.
Graduate Assistantships
Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA)
A graduate research assistantship (GRA) includes a 12-month stipend, 10 credits of tuition remission/semester, and student-only health benefits in exchange for 20 hours of work/week on a research project(s) or other duties under the direction of program faculty.
- A GRA usually begins between August 9 and September 1.
- Stipend (12-month): $32,250 minimum
- Tuition (up to 10 credits/semester)*. All students are responsible for their own fees each semester.

Applying for Financial Aid
Governmental financial aid, such as educational loans, is available to American citizens only.
To request aid, submit the FAFSA by February 15 to the appropriate campus:
Students apply for this financial aid annually and the aid begins in the fall semester. The amount of aid per student varies, depending on his/her degree of financial need.
