How to Apply
The Program in Molecular Microbiology & Immunology offers a structured interdisciplinary program leading to the PhD degree and is designed to provide training in bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and immunology. In order to apply, the following must be received no later than December 1, 2024 for US citizens and permanent residents, or November 15, 2024 for international applicants.
- A completed online application, including fee payment
- Transcripts from all institutions attended. Unofficial copies are acceptable for application review, however official copies will be required for matriculation. International students must submit a transcript evaluation from a credential evaluation service such as WES or ECE (or any NACES member evaluation service).
- Three letters of recommendation. Reference requests are sent by the Graduate School. Applicants must enter contact information in the supplemental section of the online application.
- Application fee payment must be received by December 1 or applications will not be reviewed.

- Essays – there are two essay prompts:
- Short essay question - Without limiting the discussion to your own identity, please describe how you envision contributing to the values of equity and inclusivity within the Graduate Program in Life Sciences.
- Personal Statement - The statement should be between 1 to 2 pages and should address your scientific, academic and/or professional career goals, and your objectives in pursuing graduate study. Please feel free to include how your life experiences have influenced your goals.

Our most competitive applicants typically have a grade point average above a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and we no longer accept GRE scores. Once you are ready, you can complete your application online by going directly to the official UMB Graduate School Admission Application.
Transcripts
Unofficial copies of your transcripts may be provided for the application review process and should be uploaded as supplemental items to the online application. You must submit transcripts from each college/university attended, including coursework in progress at time of application.
If you are offered admission, you must then provide official transcripts from each college/university from which a degree was earned. The transcript must be provided to the Graduate School (not School of Medicine) directly from the prior, degree-granting institution in a sealed envelope in order for that document to be considered official. Alternatively, it may be provided to the Graduate School electronically by way of a secure, encrypted platform. Each transcript should bear the signature of the registrar and the seal of the granting institution.
